About the work: from Chris Lucas
The Collaboration began in late 1991, as sort of an experiment. I was getting
great results from the combining of graphics and holograhics. It was all about
visual stimulus, one of the key ingredients of advertising.I would look through
magazines at the product ads and think about a different approach, because so
many ads just didn't hold the reader to the page, that some one had spent a
small fortune for. I had no idea of how holographics might be used, but with
photographer Brett Colvin in the studio next door, it was an intriguing
proposition to him. He set up some hot lights and the 4 by 5 inch bellows camera
and told me to see what I could get and then come and get him. It didn't take
long, as rich, vibrant colors and really wild forms started to emerge. The more
I worked with the materials and lighting, the more I experimented on how to
channel them. I tried inserting real objects into the shots, and it worked.
Not long after, I saw non-commercial images in my head that I thought could be
created. Images that I'd like framed and on my wall. I started down the path of
creating a form of abstract art that was sort of bass ackwards, in that the
"abstract" interpretation was from the viewer, not the art. It was directly due
to Brett's skills and sensitivities with a camera that the results turned out as
well as they did. So every time I had enough spare money to shoot a few images,
we did, and I'd try some new approaches. I never thought about showing, or
selling, the work until years later. We still work the same way today. I try to
create color in the most elegant state I can, with the most pleasing forms, I
don't edit and if it didn't happen through the lens, it gets pitched. Many
attempted shots just don't quite get there. Prints are made of the ones that
did.
